It Started With Worry

It was 2024. AI was everywhere. Our kids were curious-brilliantly, insatiably curious. And they wanted to use ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude just like their friends did. Just like we did.

We let them try. And within hours, the problems started.

One of our children-eight years old-asked ChatGPT a simple creative writing question and received content that included violent imagery we had to explain away at bedtime. Another came back after asking about a historical event and got a detailed, adult-framed explanation of war crimes that left her visibly distressed.

These weren't edge cases. This was happening consistently, unpredictably, to families we knew.

We Tried Everything

We spent months trying to make mainstream AI tools safe for our kids. We tried custom system prompts. We tried supervision. We tried "kids mode" browser extensions. We tried parental controls.

Nothing worked consistently. The fundamental problem was that these tools weren't built with children in mind. Safety was an afterthought-a thin layer of filters on top of a system designed for adults.

Our children deserved better. Every child deserved better.

The Team That Changed Everything

We were just parents. But we were parents with skills-in technology, in education, in design, in product development. So we decided to do something about it.

We brought in child development specialists, AI safety researchers, educators from three countries, a child psychologist who works with trauma, and parents from communities very different from our own.

We asked one question: "What would genuinely safe AI for children actually look like?"

The answer took 18 months to build.

What We Built

Piepie isn't ChatGPT with a filter. It's a ground-up reimagining of what AI for children should be. Every design decision was made with one question in mind: "Is this right for a child?"

The four-layer safety system. The memory that makes Piepie feel like a real friend who remembers you. The one-code login that doesn't require children to have email accounts. The parent notification system that protects children without betraying their trust. The ideological guidelines that let families share their values without forcing a single worldview.

All of it came from our team of parents, psychologists, and educators sitting together and asking: "What would actually help?"
